Any Storm hopeful in the colonies who’s taken a gander at Vodafone’s pricing scheme this week is probably strongly considering packing a couple duffel bags with the bare essentials they need to survive and moving to the UK to strike out on a new life — a life filled with cheap Storms. Not so fast, though — is it conceivable to think that Verizon could go the same route? At first glance, you might think that the Storm’s cachet as RIM’s flashiest, highest-end device to date would be enough to lure in customers by the droves at any price, but with the enormous price pressure placed on the industry by a $199 iPhone 3G in a heavily-overlapping target demo, rumor has it that Big Red’s looking at a severe subsidy to meet or beat its crosstown rival. Analysts are thinking (wishfully, we suspect) that a $99 Storm isn’t entirely out of the question if Verizon wants to sell an insane number of ‘em through the holidays, but just how long would it take to recoup that kind of loss?

Take a good, hard look at that picture above. We know what you’re thinking, and you’re thinking Sprint might have a CDMA version of the Palm Treo Pro lined up for action. If you’ll recall, this isn’t the first time (this month) that we’ve seen a rather believable hint that such an occurrence was on the way, and generally speaking, smokes tends to signal fire. We were always curious about Palm’s choice to launch this directly at high-end business users without giving it to a carrier, and apparently, it’s been curious as well. So, anyone got any outlandish guesses on a release date?

[Thanks, Hugh]

Nokia’s North American N96 has already made an appearance at Best Buy Mobile locations but, if you’re the die hard type that prefers to keep things as Nokia-centric as possible, you’ll no doubt be pleased to know that Nokia’s flagship phone is now also available at Nokia’s two flagship stores in New York and Chicago. You will have to pay a slight premium for all that Nokia-ness, however, with the phone running a hefty $842 (unlocked, of course) at the stores compared to the $800 Best Buy is asking. Those with a bit more will power and slightly less affection for Nokia may want to think twice though, as Amazon now also has the phone listed for just $705.99, albeit with a promised ship date of November 9th.

It’s no world-beater or anything, but the dual-display LG VX5500 is finally on sale at Verizon Wireless. Just as a refresher, this one’s bringing Bluetooth, a VGA camera, speakerphone, VZ Navigator support, voice activated dialing and Mobile Web 2.0. If you’re cool with being just a few miles behind the curve, you can dig in now for $49.99 on a 2-year contract, $119.99 on a 1-year deal or $219.99 outright.

In the grand tradition of TMI, the G1’s gone through a teardown for your voyeuristic pleasure. Underneath that chubby matte shell there are all sorts of build-related details that you probably didn’t need to know, like the fact that Panasonic built the main board, the compass was built by Asahi Kasei (exciting, we know) and the keyboard element is thin. Some might say too thin. Perhaps of most note is the trackball, which is basically identical to what RIM uses — minus the fancy glowing effect. All riveting factoids, we assure you. One item of worry is that the engineers doing the teardown noted the particular thinness of the plastic bar connecting the sliding display to the phone, and raised the troubling possibility of breaking the display off from he handset. We certainly won’t be stress testing that element, we can assure you.

T-Mobile G1 ripped to shreds, uses same trackball as RIM’s — maybe they can be friends originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 10:01:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Not that we ever (okay, maybe there was a moment of weakness in there somewhere) doubted that Nokia’s N85 was North America-bound, but the handset dubbed superior to the flagship N96 by one Italian reviewer is indeed coming to US soil. And we’ve found the FCC documentation to prove it. At this point though, there’s little the User Guide, external / internal photos and SAR report can tell us that we don’t already know, so again, the takeaway here is that we’re one (huge) step closer to having an N85 to call our own. Now that’s what’s up.

Yeah, the Bold’s out in pretty much every country recognized by the United Nations at this point, but to attention-starved Americans, we can only say this: it’s new to you. Unlike the Epix, AT&T has spared RIM’s latest and greatest full QWERTY handset from any over-the-top carrier branding, opting for a tiny logo at the bottom of the shell and letting the gorgeous industrial design speak for itself. We’re not typically BlackBerry people, but we’ve got to admit — this thing feels solid, substantial, and generally just great in the hand, and we can see how you’d feel lost without it in no time. Oh, and yes, everything you’ve heard about the display is true — it’s insanely crisp, bright, and easy on the eyes. We’ll have a more thorough look at the AT&T version of the Bold in the not-too-distant future, but in the meantime, enjoy some photography, won’t you?

If you’re tired of paying for random snacks and such the old fashioned way (you know, swiping your credit card and handing over your John Henry), Rogers Wireless feels your pain. While not the first mobile payment initiative to hit the Great North, this one has some pretty notable backers. Starting in mid-2009, Rogers, RBC and Visa will join together to allow customers “to pay for small purchases” so long as they’re holding one of the “specially-equipped mobile phones that can be waved at Visa payWave-enabled checkout readers at select retail stores and quick-service restaurants in Toronto’s downtown core.” The pilot will utilize Motorola handsets outfitted with Near Field Communication (NFC) contactless chips, while Gemalto will be managing the transfer of credit card information from RBC to the secure SIM card. There’s no word on plans beyond the trial, but here’s hoping it does something more than just fizzle out.

Yeah, you’ve seen the pre-production units, but that whole “Your Name - S/N xxxx” kind of tarnished the whole experience a bit. After all, when you’re looking at images of a $2,000 phone, you expect flawlessness. Boy Genius himself has managed to procure a real deal production AURA, and rather than just sitting around gawking at the gorgeous circular LCD for hours on end, he had the heart to snap a few photos so we could all live a little vicariously. Hit the read link to have a look at what you’re probably definitely missing out on.

Remember when Vodafone told us to hold our horses a bit on the pricing details when the BlackBerry Storm was made official this month? Believe it or not, the holding period is over, and now we’re staring some actual price tags in the face. Reportedly, Voda will make the touchscreen BlackBerry available with four different pricing plans, so we’ll get right to it. The Perfect Choice Access 100 plan will get you a Storm for €109.99 ($141), while the per-month rate (€49.99; $64) will include 100 minutes (yes, seriously), 100 texts (still for real here, people), 1GB of BlackBerry e-mail, mobile TV and ten music downloads. The Perfect Choice Access 200 / 400 / 600 plans bump up the minutes and texts just as you’d expect for €64.99 / €84.99 / €99.99 per month while netting you the phone for €64.99 / €69.99 / €49.99, respectively. For the full spill, head on down to the read link — meanwhile, here in America, we all sit waiting for Verizon to follow suit…
