With the almost-ubiquitous nature of GPS, it’s hard to imagine that US government still maintains the ability to degrade the system’s resolution or even just turn it off for national security reasons, but every GPS satellite launched to date features what the military calls Selective Availability — an option that hasn’t been used since 2000, but has still been implemented throughout the GPS system. That’s about to change, however, as the Pentagon announced yesterday that new GPS satellites will no longer feature SA. No official reason was given other than a “strong commitment to users by reinforcing that this global utility can be counted on to support peaceful civil applications around the globe,” but hey — we’ll take what we can get.

Man, we’ve been painstakingly following iriver’s development of the W10 media player since it was first rumored back in July of 2006. Well before touchscreen DAPs were all the rage. One hands-on and several postings later, iRiver seems prepped to push their baby out in November to what will assuredly be an adoring public, in S.Korea anyway. What’s the fuss? 3-inch, 480 x 272 TFT touchscreen interface; WiFi with Skyhook’s GPS-like positioning and NAVTEQ maps; VoIP; FM tuner; AOL XM radio streaming; 2/4/8GB capacities with miniSD expansion; and support for MP3, WMA, OGG audio and MPEG-4, WMV9 video all riding atop an iriver tuned WinCE 5.0 OS. Thing is, those NAVTEQ maps and POIs are “only suitable for US” — a hopeful sign that we’ll see these Stateside in time for the holidays.

[Thanks, Al]

The Dynasty-esque drama of the New York City taxi / GPS saga doesn’t seem to be petering out. Two weeks ago, thousands of New York City cabbies went on strike (albeit not very successfully) to protest the city’s insistence on adding elaborate GPS / entertainment systems to driver’s cars which are capable of tracking pick-up and drop-off points. Now it appears that a group of cabbies are taking the fight to court, filing a lawsuit against the city claiming that the mandate to include the GPS units was unconstitutional, and that the devices will give away “trade secrets” by revealing their driving patterns. “Each taxi driver regards his or her own pattern as proprietary,” the suit states. The New York Taxi Workers Alliance — the group that organized the strike — is also behind this latest move, though not all drivers are united against the GPS units, which will also add credit card services, text messaging, and television to the cars.

It’s been some time since we’ve heard anything from Mexens Technology, but now its virtual GPS system is finally available for the iPhone. Yeah, the program still utilizes “WiFi and cellular tower triangulation techniques,” but according to the firm’s CEO, “this is just as if the iPhone were equipped with a GPS chip.” Of course, we’re still doubtful that this peer-to-peer location approach works just as good as a bonafide GPS receiver, but considering that you won’t be forced to pay the $24.99 purchase price until after 15 days are up, why not give it a go and find out?

Sure, your phone has GPS capabilities, but who wants to carry around a receiver everywhere you go? Well, what if the receiver were tiny… and your key ring? That’s exactly what Proporta is proposing (ha ha) with its latest “world’s smallest” (the company’s claim, certainly not ours) GPS receiver, the Freedom. The ultra-compact device does in fact function as a key fob, in addition to being a SiRF Star III-equipped receiver which can interface with whatever friendly device you happen to have nearby. The Freedom will last you nine hours on a single charge, connects with up to 20 satellites, and plays nice with Bluetooth devices, making your navigational world slightly more enjoyable. The little guy is available right now for €99.95, or $129.99.

While laptops with integrated GPS are still a somewhat rare breed, USB devices that add GPS capabilities to plain old laptops are definitely not, with I-O Data only the latest to offer a product that does just that. From the looks of it, the company’s Navi Clip device should get the job done nicely, with a standard SiFR Star III chipset concealed in its tiny 2 x 1 x 0.4-inch casing. You’ll also get a USB extension cable (apparently to let you position it for better reception), and some “Supper Mapple” mapping software, which we’re guessing will be of little use anywhere outside of Japan (or outside of Windows). If that suits you just fine, you’ll be able to pick one up early next month for ¥24,200, or just over $200.

LG’s LN800, which is already available in certain locales such as Australia, is reportedly headed to Europe. Word on the street claims that this LN700 successor will feature a four-inch 320 x 240 resolution display, a SiRFstarIII GPS chipset, NAVTEQ maps, a 276MHz Centrality Atlas 2 processor, 64MB of RAM, an SD expansion slot, integrated speaker, three hours of battery life, text-to-speech, and a built-in image viewer / audio player. Additionally, the LN800T (which includes a RDS-TMC traffic receiver) should land right alongside its lesser-spec’d sibling later this month, and while the LN800 can purportedly be had for €200 ($277), the LN800T will require €100 ($139) more. Click on for a shot of the back.

Cobra, never a company to let you down when you need that special kind of radar that they provide (the ticket avoiding kind), has introduced the US’s first GPS-locator equipped radar detector, the XRS R9G — just like they said they would. What does a radar detector need GPS for? Well, this one holds a database of speed and red-light cameras, warning you when you’re approaching so you can ease off the gas pedal, save a few lives, and not get yourself a nasty, nasty ticket. “Across the country, the number of speed and red light cameras is growing exponentially,” says Tony Mirabelli, senior vice president of marketing and sales at Cobra, adding, “Now drivers can stay alert no matter where they travel.” The company plans to further augment the detector’s capabilities with alerts for “black spots” (high accident zones), as well as school and construction alerts. The XRS R9G is available now, retailing for $449.95.
