Thankfully, it didn’t take too awfully long after Fujitsu’s LifeBook T2010 got official before the folks over at PCMag were able to wrap their palms around the tablet and toss out their two pennies. Upon first opening this bad boy up, reviewers were stunned by the incredibly bright LED-backlit display, and while they seemed slightly bummed about the lack of an optical drive and the relatively weak processor, it was well-spec’d enough to handle the bulk of everyday tasks with ease. Overall, the crew was thrilled by the remarkable battery life and the beautiful screen (or did we already mention that?), but if you’re still wondering exactly how this machine ended up with four out of five stars, be sure and hit the read link after you slip on those readin’ glasses.

If you’ll recall, Asus’ Eee PC first went up for pre-order at NCIXUS just under a month ago, and merely days after the wee machine was exposed courtesy of a Russian review, here it is again on yet another e-tailer’s website. The Eee PC 701 is holding down the high-end with 4GB of built-in storage and a $399.99 pricetag, while two versions of the Eee PC 700 are available at $259.99 and $299.99 price points. Interestingly, the website requires a $150 “non-refundable deposit” up front, and promises to only charge the balance once your laptop ships “in early October.” Personally, we still wouldn’t be so quick to put up a down payment just yet, but for the brave (and unfathomably impatient) ones out there, hit the read link to place your (pre)-order.

Well kids, it’s official… the Beast is loose. Dell’s M1730, which had been extensively leaked over the past few months, has been made public on the Dell blog (they even go as far as naming us in the notice). As expected, the gaming laptop is crammed full of over-spec’d gear, like the Core 2 Extreme X7900 (which they say is now overclocked to 3.2GHz), dual NVIDIA GeForce Go 8700M GT GPUs, and a slew of other lap-burning components sure to make even the toughest dude start crying immediately. The whole fugly package is available for purchase on the Dell website right now, but approach it with extreme caution. Look, all we’re saying is this: when the Beast crushes and dismembers everything you hold dear, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Panasonic is getting funky-fresh on everyone today with word of a new lineup of Toughbooks making their way out to store shelves. The company is launching four different models of the hard-as-nails laptops (W7, T7, R7, Y7), all of which are based on Intel’s Santa Rosa chipset. The new over-performers are said to be able to withstand a 76-centimeter drop (about desk height) while switched on and continue working, versus the previous model’s 30-centimeter rating (which applied only when turned off). The Toughbooks also have an “irrigation system” for the keyboard which can route water away from important bits to a “drain” at the base of the computer. Keep reading after the break to see a rundown of all the new models and specs.

Beast is right, this thing is just a monster. We’re fairly certain we’ve held laptop before that are lighter than the Dell M1730’s LCD alone. That said, it can certainly pump out the graphics, and the amBX-esque lighting functions are kind of growing on us. An extra perk to the AGEIA PhysX systems is an exclusive Unreal Tournament 3 level with extra explosion fodder, which is possibly one of the best selling points we’ve heard for the physics card.

ASUS is showing off their design chops again today with the introduction of the U6S. That nudges their total laptop model tally to 48 by our count — we’re not talking custom builds mind you; ASUS now offers forty-fracking-eight different series of laptops with an endlessly complex matrix of submodels — the apparent curse of being both an OEM and retail brand. That travesty aside, the new 12.1-inch U6S design is simply smokin’ in our not so humble opinion. Hitting Europe in October for €1,999 (about $2,833), it offers a balanced compromise of power and portability with a sweet list of specs tucked into that sleek little 3.3-pound (1.5-kg) package. Details after the break.

We just caught sight of three new Asus laptops, but it looks like that’s not all the company has up its sleeve, with its ultra-portable U1E model now also making its first appearance. This one boasts an even smaller form factor than the company’s just-announced 12.1-inch, 3.3 pound U6S laptop, in this case shrinking things down to an 11.1-inch WXGA display and a mere 2.2 pound carrying weight (albeit with only a 3 cell battery). Otherwise, you’ll get an Intel Core Duo ULV7500 processor, up to 2GB of RAM, a 100GB hard drive, and built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, with an external DVD burner thrown in for good measure. A nine cell battery is also available for those that actually want to get some work done, with it apparently promising upwards of six hours of running time. Look for this one to be available next month, in Italy at least, for €1,999 (or $2,844).

Just a week ago, reports were cropping up regarding Microsoft’s decision to give Vista Business / Ultimate customers a “downgrade to XP” option amidst complaints over its latest operating system. Now, the Redmond powerhouse has decided to “keep selling Windows XP until the end of June 2008, delaying a scheduled transition to its newer Windows Vista software by five months.” Originally, the planned phase out date for XP was January 30th of next year, but now the firm has decided to “extend XP sales in response to feedback from computer manufacturers who said there were customers who still wanted to buy the older operating system.” Of note, Mike Nash, a Microsoft corporate vice president, was quoted as saying that the company was “a little ambitious to think that it would need to make Windows XP available for only a year after the release of Windows Vista,” referring to the fact that it typically makes its older OS available for two years after the launch of a new one.
